2021 Highlights

2021 was a field season for the record books! Our teams covered more ground than ever managing invasive species, and got to protect and visit the best sights our service area has to offer.  As a primarily grant-funded operation, L2LCISMA utilizes a variety of funding options each year to complete multiple management and restoration projects in the Upper Peninsula. With many grants paused in 2020, 2021 was jam packed. Here's some of the highlights from this season:

  • This year L2L CISMA hired four summer field crew, totaling 12 seasonal staff members.
  • 310 miles of trail were surveyed for priority invasive species.
  • 780 acres were surveyed for priority invasive species.
  • 371 acres of habitat were treated for invasive species using best management practices.
  • 38 miles of inland lake and Great Lakes shoreline surveyed for European Frogbit and other invasive species.
  •  1,259 acres of habitat were surveyed for Hemlock Wooly Adelgid.
  • Three federally designated Wilderness Areas and one National Recreation Area were surveyed for priority invasive species.
  • Over 100,000 impressions to the public made over the course of the year through outreach events and other efforts.

We were able to accomplish these milestones with the help of our partnerships and funders. This year our major funding sources were secured through the US Forest Service, the Great Lakes Restoration Initiative, the Michigan Invasive Species Program, and the Department of Natural Resources, along with smaller contracts throughout the year!
